In BFDI, BFDIA, and IDFB, but mostly BFB and TPOT, characters will occasionally change their appearance throughout all or part of the show. Although these changes are often temporary and are changed back to normal, usually after a character’s death and recovery, there are other times when the changes are permanent. It is assumed that original appearances of the characters who have changed will return once they die, though there are some instances where this was not the case.
In order for a change to count, it must be a noticeable physical change, which excludes Saw's fumes, Loser entering the liar ball, Four merging with the desert, Flower being put into a pot, Rocky being unable to vomit, characters wearing sweaters, FreeSmart with their balloons, most of the TPOT debutants being glued onto the Hotel, Golf Ball being glued to a tree, Coiny trapped in a cash register, Coiny and Needle with swapped voices, Gelatin, Firey and Rocky's legs being tied, and Barf Bag with any liquid in her, including combinations of liquids. In addition, it must span over more than one episode, thus excluding Announcer with a corner bitten off, Barf Bag with grass patch and water, Flower with a sweater, Gelatin with half of Lollipop's colors, Marker and Pillow having burn marks around them, Coiny, Book, Firey Speaker Box, Pin, and Tennis Ball made of Yoyle Metal, The S! becoming cave-drawn, Spongy being charred or him getting a burn mark, Pencil with gear earrings and Purple Face's Shoes, Tennis Ball covered in pink paint and ripped in half by Flower, characters as zombies, and Teardrop covered in Barf Bag's acid and vomit. Also no non-canon changes, thus excluding Two in the whiteboard, Nine being beaten up and having his bag mask, and Pie with a chunk of her head squished.

- As of BFB 15, Woody has had the most changes in one body. These changes include: piece chipped off by Rocky in "Take the Plunge: Part 1" (which becomes permanent), turned orange in "Four Goes Too Far", dented by Bell in "The Liar Ball You Don't Want", and became smaller after he entered Four's eye in "Don't Dig Straight Down".
- He is also the first character to receive a change, as well as a permanent one.

- He is also tied with Ice Cube for the most changes. - Woody, Saw, and Dora are the only contestants who've received changes that became permanent parts of their bodies.
- Woody, Pin, Bomby, Ice Cube, Donut and Fanny are the only six contestants who kept their changes even after dying.
- As of BFB 15, David and Dora are the only contestants to keep their changes in the EXIT. While Dora's is permanent, David still has his change in TPOT.
- As of TPOT, Saw, Needle and Ice Cube are the only contestants to start a season with their character design changes from BFB being carried over.
- However, due to Ice Cube and Needle's character changes now being gone, this leaves Saw the only contestant left with a character change. However, this change is permanent.
- Lollipop is the only contestant so far to end a season with a temporary change.
